Understanding EPC's Role as a Member of the North American Hazardous Materials Management Association (NAHMMA)

Article written by Gerry Javier

North American Hazardous Materials Management Association (NAHMMA) was established in 1993. The association was created for "professionals working to reduce and manage household and business-generated hazardous waste. A volunteer-run, non-profit organization, NAHMMA is committed to pollution prevention, product stewardship, and the safe and effective handling of hazardous materials from households and businesses. NAHMMA supports its members with exclusive training opportunities, relevant industry news, and access to a diverse and experienced nationwide network of people involved in the hazardous waste management industry."

There are currently ten NAHMMA chapters. Membership consists of representatives from government, private, and non-profit organizations. Chapters offer networking resources, professional development, and other services which benefit members. EPC is a proud charter member of the Florida Chapter, the largest in NAHMMA, which was founded over twenty years ago. Other members include representatives from county and municipal offices, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, private companies that deal with hazardous waste management, as well as companies that provide equipment or support to these types of businesses.

In addition to taking advantage of the networking benefits NAHMMA has to offer, EPC staff provides training and presentations at Chapter workshops, is active in various committees, and currently serves on the Florida Chapter Board. An annual workshop is held at different locations throughout the State.  Training pertinent to the local Household Hazardous Waste and Small Quantity Generator (SQG) Programs takes place over a few days and provides attendees an opportunity to exchange industry information and ideas. In 2020, Florida held its first virtual workshop as a result of COVID-related restrictions and provided bi-monthly webinars open to all NAHMMA chapters.

A national conference is also hosted annually by the parent NAHMMA organization and is the largest gathering of Household Hazardous Waste industry professionals nationwide. The 2022 NAHMMA National Conference is being held in Fort Myers, Florida in July, bringing together hazardous waste professionals, buyers, and leaders from municipal collection and SQG Programs throughout the U.S. It provides cutting-edge information, best practices, and the latest guidance in Household Hazardous Waste management. EPC staff is actively involved with the training and planning committees for the national conference, which marks the 37th held by the organization since its inception, and we look forward to participating in this year’s event.
